I love defense.

5/12/12

I love defense.  I appreciate those who take pride in fielding their position.  All of America is learning how to pitch and hit.  This is good and it’s necessary in becoming a good ball player. If you really want to separate yourself you will learn to be a master of your position in the infield, outfield, and behind the plate as a catcher.  I can go anywhere and find you a bunch of kids who hit .500 in high school. How many of those kids can steal me 30 bases a year, make the backhand play in the hole at shortstop, throw a runner out at home plate from right field, track down a shot in the gap to save an extra base hit, or pick someone off the base paths from behind the plate?  Maybe one out of 10?  Maybe.  This is the kid who will play baseball beyond high school.  Ok, I proved a point, now what?  Here’s what:  Be SMOOTH and QUICK with your actions.  Good fielders are SMOOTH and QUICK.  DO NOT be out of control and fast.  The opposite of SMOOTH and QUICK is out of control and fast.  The opposite of a good fielder is a bad fielder.  That’s the difference.  TAKE PRIDE
